What did this study measure?
We ran 21 patient-intent dental queries through Google across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and recorded every source cited by the AI Overview each one returned. The result is a count of which practices Google's generated answers name, and how widely.
- 20 of 21 queries returned an AI Overview; the miss was implant cost in Okotoks
- 273 citations captured, de-duplicated so a practice cited twice in one answer counts once
- 53% pointed at local practice websites, 26% at Google listings, 10% at practices outside the region and 10% at third parties
- 79 distinct Calgary-area practices were named — half again as many as Ottawa returned on an identical query set
- Every out-of-region domain opened by hand and its published street address recorded
- Single point in time — captured August 2, 2026, and generated answers vary between runs
This measures Google AI Overviews only. It does not measure ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot, which use different retrieval systems and require separate tracking.
Four Findings
Nobody owns this market. 79 distinct Calgary-area practices were cited, and 50 of them (63%) appear exactly once. The ten strongest hold only 36% of local citations, and the most-cited practice in the entire region has just 7. In Calgary the answer changes almost every time — which means a practice that publishes properly can take a position currently held by no one.
Invisalign behaves like a different market entirely. Calgary practices take 74% of implant-cost citations and 79% of Canadian Dental Care Plan citations — but only 33% of Invisalign citations. 43% of Invisalign citations are Google Business Profile listings and 15% go to practices outside the region altogether.
The Google listing matters in the suburbs and not at all downtown. Calgary Central and Airdrie returned zero listing citations. Chestermere returned 23, Okotoks 20 and Northeast Calgary 20. The same investment in a Google Business Profile is worth very different amounts depending on where you practise.
An orthodontist in California is cited in Calgary answers. 9 practices with verified addresses outside the Calgary region take 27 citations (10%) — including a Grande Prairie group cited 7 times across 5 sub-markets, two Greater Toronto practices we independently identified in our own GTA study, and an orthodontic group headquartered in Monterey, California.

The same practice can own the implant answer and be invisible on Invisalign, because each question is answered from a different kind of page — and each has a different competitor taking the gap.

Zero listing citations and zero out-of-region citations — the cleanest, least-contested question in the study, and almost nobody in Calgary has written the page. The remaining 21% goes to insurers and information sites.

9 Practices, 27 Citations, 10% of the Market
Every domain below was opened individually and its published street address recorded. None has a location in Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks or the surrounding region. Two of them — Oakville and Stouffville, Ontario — were independently identified in our own Greater Toronto Area dental study before we ever looked at Calgary.

None of these practices can treat a Calgary patient. They appear because they published a clear, well-structured page about what Invisalign costs, and Google's summariser does not check whether the practice is reachable.

All 79 practices cited across the 21 queries analysed, ranked by how many generated answers cited the practice's own website. The most-cited practice in the whole region holds 7 of 146 local citations — read the top of this table as evidence of how thin the lead is, not of who is winning.

The Listing Column Is the One to Read Twice
A Google Business Profile earns nothing in Calgary Central or Airdrie and a great deal in Chestermere, Okotoks and Northeast Calgary. That is the same split we found in Calgary legal, and it is not something a single city-wide strategy can address.

72 citations (26%) point to a Google Business Profile panel rather than a website. These carry no publisher domain, so they are reported by business name. Being named this way means Google recognises the business but is not quoting anything it has published.

Where Else the Citations Go
Third Parties Take Only a Tenth of This Market
28 citations (10%) went to something that is not a dental practice. Dentistry remains a market where the practices themselves hold the answer — unlike accounting, where in this same region 29% of citations go to forums, chains and government.

Same Method, Two Cities
Calgary Against Ottawa
Both studies ran the same instrument against the same three patient questions across seven sub-markets. Calgary returns half again as many distinct practices as Ottawa and its top ten hold a materially smaller share: a larger, flatter, more contestable field.

Method
Proof, Not Promises
- STEP 01
Ran 21 patient-intent queries through Google with city-level location targeting across seven Calgary-region sub-markets: Calgary Central, Northwest Calgary, Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere and Okotoks.
- STEP 02
Tested each sub-market with the same three questions — implant cost, Invisalign cost and Canadian Dental Care Plan participation, so every area was asked identical questions.
- STEP 03
Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
- STEP 04
De-duplicated citations per answer, so a practice cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
- STEP 05
Opened every practice domain whose name did not already contain an unambiguous Calgary-region place name and read its published street address from its own contact page; practices with a verified address outside the region are reported separately and that location is named.
- STEP 06
Counted Google Business Profile panels separately as listing citations, attributed to the business named in the panel, and classified directories, insurers, manufacturers, forums and social platforms as third party.
- STEP 07
Crawled on August 2, 2026 without personalisation, and recorded the crawl window so any figure can be re-checked against the day it was captured.
Limitations
This is a single-point-in-time snapshot. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists will differ if re-run; trends require repeated sampling. Practice identification is by website domain, and where a group operates several sites each is counted separately unless the study states a merge.
One of the 21 queries — implant cost in Okotoks — returned no AI Overview and contributes no citations. Only three patient questions were tested; cleanings, emergency care, orthodontics beyond Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry may behave differently. Sub-market labels follow Google's own location targeting, so “Northwest Calgary” is Google's quadrant rather than a municipal boundary.
AI Overviews reach the largest audience of any AI answer surface — no login, no app, shown to anyone searching Google — so this is the widest-reach measurement available. It is not the whole picture, and a business performing well here may perform differently elsewhere. Every figure comes from search results captured on the date stated and can be independently checked by running the same queries yourself.

Calgary is the most open dental market we have measured. 50 of 79 cited practices appear exactly once, no practice holds more than 7 citations, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan question — the one with the clearest patient intent — is being answered almost entirely by whichever practice happened to write a page about it. That is a position available to whoever takes it first.
