AEO Services
Answer Engine Optimization Services
Some questions never reach your website because a search engine already answered them, using a passage lifted straight off one of your pages — or one of a competitor's. That is extraction, and it is a different problem from being cited inside a generated answer.
Answer engine optimization is the structural half of the work: making sure the passage that gets lifted is yours, is correct, and is one you would be happy to be quoted on. It shares a foundation with our generative engine optimization services and is measured separately.

What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring pages so that search and assistant surfaces extract the right passage from the right page when someone asks a question. It targets featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice read-outs, knowledge panels and in-product answers — surfaces that lift existing text rather than generating new text — and it is measured by which tracked questions you own and what owning them does to clicks.
- Extraction, not synthesis — a passage is lifted, largely intact, from one page
- Structural work: question-form headings, direct answers, the right format
- Moves quickly — a re-crawl can change ownership in days
- Cannot be claimed — no markup, submission or payment wins a snippet
- Reported with click impact, because winning one can cost you visits
- Most valuable where customers ask short questions with clean answers
Many agencies use AEO and GEO to mean the same thing. We separate them by mechanic — extraction against synthesis — and say which one a piece of work belongs to.
The Distinction
AEO Next to GEO
The two terms are used interchangeably across most of this industry. Here is the line we draw, why we draw it, and where it stops mattering.
| Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| The mechanic | Extraction — a passage is lifted out of one page largely intact. | Synthesis — a claim is assembled across several sources and cited. |
| What decides inclusion | Whether one passage on one page answers the question directly and cleanly. | Whether your organization is retrievable, corroborated and worth citing at all. |
| The unit of work | Passage structure, question-form headings, formats matched to the surface. | Entity clarity, third-party evidence, coverage across a prompt set. |
| How it is measured | Ownership of tracked questions, and what winning them did to clicks. | Mention rate, citation share and factual accuracy across repeated runs. |
| How fast it moves | Days to weeks — a re-crawl can change it. | Months — it depends on sources that do not update on your timetable. |
| The honest overlap | Both need crawlable pages that answer a real question directly. | Which is why we sell one programme and separate only the measurement. |
The Surfaces
What Actually Extracts From Your Pages
Six surfaces, each choosing a source and a passage on its own terms. Knowing which ones a business page can realistically win is most of the value of an audit.
Featured snippets
A passage, list or table lifted out of one page and shown above the results. Google chooses both the page and the exact passage, and it re-chooses constantly. You can make a passage easy to lift; you cannot nominate it.
People Also Ask
An expanding set of related questions, each answered by an extracted passage. It rewards pages that answer several adjacent questions cleanly rather than one question at length, and it is where most unclaimed opportunity sits.
Knowledge panels and entity cards
Assembled from what the wider web agrees about an organization, not from your own page. Fixing these is entity work — registers, profiles, consistent naming — rather than content work.
Voice and assistant read-outs
A spoken answer usually returns one source rather than ten, which makes the extraction question unusually consequential. Concise, self-contained, plainly worded passages survive being read aloud; hedged ones do not.
Direct answers and in-SERP tools
Definitions, conversions, hours, prices and short factual answers rendered without a click. Some of these can never be won by a business page, and knowing which ones is worth more than trying.
In-product answers
Bing, Copilot's search pane, Perplexity's quick answer and assistants embedded in browsers all extract before they synthesise. The structural work that wins a snippet is the same work that survives extraction there.
Scope of Influence
What AEO Can and Cannot Do
Worth settling before anyone signs anything, and the row about traffic is the one most proposals leave out.
| What AEO can do | What AEO cannot do | |
|---|---|---|
| Winning a surface | Make a passage the easiest correct thing to lift for a defined question. | Claim a snippet. There is no submission, no markup that compels one, and no purchase. |
| Holding it | Reduce the obvious reasons you lose one — staleness, ambiguity, a competitor answering more directly. | Keep it. Snippets change hands on re-crawl, and sometimes disappear entirely for a query. |
| Choosing the passage | Write so that every candidate passage on the page is one you would be happy to see quoted. | Specify which sentence gets used, or how it is truncated. |
| Structured data | Make your markup accurate and consistent with the visible page. | Buy a rich result with it. Google narrowed FAQ and HowTo rich results sharply in 2023, and eligibility is its decision, not a setting. |
| Traffic | Report what happened to clicks and enquiries after a surface was won. | Promise that winning one increases visits. Sometimes it answers the question so completely that it does the opposite. |
Scope of Work
What Our AEO Services Improve
Extractable passages
A question-form heading, then the answer in the first two sentences beneath it, complete enough to stand alone if it is the only thing anyone reads. Most pages bury the answer three paragraphs into context nobody asked for.
Format matched to the question
Comparisons want a table, sequences want an ordered list, definitions want a sentence. A question that gets answered in the wrong shape rarely gets extracted, however good the writing is.
Question coverage without cannibalisation
Adjacent questions grouped onto the page that should own them, rather than a thin page per question competing with its neighbours. This is where most AEO programmes quietly damage a site.
Structured data that matches the page
Accurate markup, consistent with visible content, on the types that still carry eligibility. We will tell you when markup is clarity rather than leverage, which is most of the time.
Entity accuracy for panels
Knowledge panels are assembled from registers, profiles and references you do not own. Correcting them is slower and less glamorous than content work, and it is what actually moves them.
Ownership and click tracking together
Every tracked question is reported twice: whether you own the surface, and what owning it did to clicks and enquiries. Reporting the first without the second is how agencies show growth during a decline.
How We Work
Our Answer Engine Optimization Process
- STEP 01
Baseline
agree the question set, record which answer surfaces exist for each, who currently owns them and what is being extracted.
- STEP 02
Diagnose
separate the questions you lose on structure from the ones you lose on authority, and the ones no business page can ever win.
- STEP 03
Map
assign every question to the single page that should own it, consolidating where two pages already compete.
- STEP 04
Improve
rewrite the answering passages, correct the format, fix the markup and repair the entity sources behind any panel.
- STEP 05
Re-test: re-check ownership on the same question set, and report the click and enquiry change alongside it.
The Part Most AEO Pitches Leave Out
Winning a featured snippet can reduce your traffic. If the extracted passage answers the question completely, the reason to click is gone — and the agency that won it for you will still report it as a win, because ownership went up.
That is not an argument against the work. Being the quoted authority on a question is worth having, and for many questions the person who reads the answer and does not click was never going to become a customer. It is an argument for reporting both numbers, and for deciding in advance which questions are worth owning at any click cost and which are not.
How to Evaluate an AEO Agency
This is a young label attached to some very old work, which makes it easy to oversell. These six questions separate a measurement practice from a slide deck — ask them of us as readily as of anyone else.
- Which questions will you track, and did we approve the list?
- How often is ownership re-checked, and against which surfaces?
- When we win a snippet, will you show me what happened to clicks?
- Which of these questions do you think we cannot win, and why?
- How will you avoid creating pages that compete with our existing ones?
- What does a month where we lost ground look like in your reporting?
The answers you want are specific and slightly boring: a question set you approved, a stated re-check cadence, click impact reported next to ownership, and a named list of questions the agency thinks you cannot win.
Who AEO Is Worth It For
It earns its cost where customers ask short, specific questions with clean answers — costs, eligibility, timelines, what a procedure involves, whether something is covered — and where being the source of that answer carries authority. Dental and healthcare groups, law firms, professional services and anyone whose customers research before enquiring.
It is a poor fit if nobody can approve a specific claim in writing, if the pages that should answer these questions cannot be edited, or if the only acceptable outcome is more clicks. On that last one we would rather establish the disagreement early than report against a number we do not think measures the work.
