AI Visibility Reports

Google now answers many buying questions directly, above the results, in a generated summary that names businesses and cites a short list of sources. For a large share of prospective customers, that summary is the entire research process.

These studies measure who appears in those answers, by industry and by metro. Every figure comes from search results captured on a stated date, with the method published so the numbers can be tested rather than taken on trust.

What is an AI visibility report?

It is a count of which businesses a generative answer engine names and cites for the questions customers ask before buying. Rather than estimating reach, it captures the answers themselves — the generated text and every source cited — for a fixed set of queries, in named locations, at a stated moment.

  • Real captured answers, not modelled estimates or projections
  • City-level location targeting, because generated answers differ by where the searcher is
  • Every cited source recorded, then classified by hand
  • De-duplicated per answer, so one answer citing a business twice counts once
  • A stated crawl date, because a snapshot without one is not a measurement
  • Published method, so anyone can re-run it and disagree with us

Markets

Where We Have Measured

Each market is a set of studies run through one instrument across that metro's sub-markets, so the verticals within it can be compared — and, because the instrument does not change between metros, so can the markets. A metro appears here only once its studies are published; we would rather run a city properly than give it a placeholder page.

4 metros measured, each across 7 sub-markets and the same five verticals. If you want your metro covered, say so on an audit request — the queries have to be built around genuine buying intent in that market, so it is worth hearing which questions actually precede a purchase where you are.

How We Measure

Each study starts from the questions people actually ask immediately before choosing a provider — cost, coverage, comparison and eligibility questions, not brand searches. Those queries are run through Google with city-level location targeting across the sub-markets that make up the metro, without personalisation.

For every query we capture the complete search result page, including the AI Overview block, its generated text and every source it cites. Citations are de-duplicated per answer. Each cited domain is then reviewed by hand and classified — a business's own website, or a directory, portal, insurer, trade publication or forum.

What comes out is a count, not a score. We do not weight, model or adjust the figures, and where we could not verify something we say so rather than estimating it.

What These Reports Cannot Tell You

A citation is not a customer. These studies measure presence in generated answers — not clicks, calls, enquiries or revenue. Presence is a precondition for being chosen, not evidence of having been chosen, and we will not present it as the latter.

They are also single points in time. Generated answers are produced fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists differ on re-runs. Structural findings — how concentrated a market is, which source types dominate, whether citations cross city boundaries — are far more stable than any individual business's count.

And they cover Google AI Overviews only. That surface reaches the largest audience of any AI answer surface, with no login or app required, which is why we start there. It is not the whole picture.
