AI Visibility Report
Who Google's AI Recommends for Legal Help in the GTA
A citation study of Google AI Overviews across seven Greater Toronto Area sub-markets and four practice areas, measuring which law firms AI-generated answers name and cite — and which are absent.
21 client-intent queries. 241 citations captured. 87 firms named. Crawled July 30, 2026, and reproducible by anyone willing to run the same queries.

The finding in one sentence
The second most-cited firm for Greater Toronto personal injury queries is headquartered in Kingston, about 250 kilometres east of Toronto — and it appeared in six of the seven sub-markets we measured. In AI answers, being local is no longer the advantage it is in the map pack.

What did this study measure?
We ran 21 client-intent legal cost queries through Google across seven GTA sub-markets and four practice areas, and recorded every source cited by the AI Overview each one returned. The result is a count of which law firms Google's generated answers name, and how widely.
- 21 of 21 queries returned an AI Overview — every cost question we asked
- 241 citations captured, de-duplicated so a firm cited twice in one answer counts once
- 84% pointed at firm websites rather than directories, portals or trade press
- 87 distinct firms named across the seven sub-markets
- Four practice areas — real estate, personal injury, family and immigration
- Single point in time — captured July 30, 2026, and generated answers vary between runs
This measures Google AI Overviews only. It does not measure ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot, which use different retrieval systems and require separate tracking.
Ask an AI assistant to explain this report
It is a long study with a lot of numbers. Open it in your assistant with the question already written — including a request for the limitations, because those matter as much as the findings.
The question is copied to your clipboard when you pick one — paste it if your assistant opens empty.

Four Findings
Every cost question we asked produced an AI Overview. All 21 queries — across real estate, personal injury, family and immigration — returned a generated answer citing named firms. These are the questions people ask immediately before choosing a lawyer.
Location has stopped protecting you. 41 of the 87 firms cited appear in more than one sub-market, and the leaders appear in all seven. Two firms were cited in every single sub-market we measured. The map pack still rewards proximity; the AI Overview does not.
Firms from outside the GTA are taking Toronto-area answers. We verified 7 cited firms headquartered outside the Greater Toronto Area — in Kingston, Ottawa, Barrie, London, Calgary and one in Michigan — together accounting for 20 citations, 10% of all firm citations. This is a floor, not a total; it counts only firms whose location we confirmed.
Positions are already consolidating. The ten most-cited firms hold 30% of all citations, and only 53% of firms were cited just once. Unlike a wide-open market, incumbents are forming here — which means the cost of waiting is rising.
The Citation Leaderboard
Every Firm Cited, Ranked
All 87 law firms cited in GTA AI Overviews across the 21 queries analysed, ranked by how many generated answers cited the firm's own website. “Sub-mkts” counts how many of the seven GTA areas the firm appeared in.

A dash in the head-office column means we did not verify the firm as being based outside the GTA — not that a GTA location was confirmed. Repeat citations of the same domain within a single answer are counted once. Captured July 30, 2026.
The Proximity Finding
Firms Outside the GTA Winning GTA Answers
This is the most commercially significant pattern in the data, and it has no equivalent in traditional local search. Google's map pack is built on proximity: a firm 250 kilometres away cannot appear in it. An AI Overview has no such constraint. It cites whichever page best explains the question — wherever that page was published.
| Firm domain | Head office | Citations | Sub-mkts | Cited in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| bergeronclifford.com | Kingston, ON | 6 | 6 | Brampton, Markham, Mississauga, North York, Scarborough, Toronto (Downtown) |
| nelliganlaw.ca | Ottawa, ON | 5 | 5 | Brampton, Markham, North York, Toronto (Downtown), Vaughan |
| oatleyvigmond.com | Barrie, ON | 5 | 5 | Brampton, Markham, North York, Scarborough, Toronto (Downtown) |
| burntucker.com | Ottawa, ON | 1 | 1 | Toronto (Downtown) |
| criminaldefenselawcenterwestmichigan.com | Michigan, USA | 1 | 1 | Brampton |
| harrisonpensa.com | London, ON | 1 | 1 | Mississauga |
| kahanelaw.com | Calgary, AB | 1 | 1 | Toronto (Downtown) |
It is not competing with you for office space, for local reviews, or for a place in the map pack. It is competing with you for the answer, and it is winning on published content alone.
By Practice Area
Where the Competition Actually Sits
Practice areas behave as separate markets. Personal injury is the most contested and the most penetrated by firms from outside the GTA — three of its five most-cited firms are headquartered elsewhere in Ontario. Real estate is dominated by firms publishing specific, itemised fee content. Family and divorce has the smallest field, making it the most winnable area in this study.
| Practice area | Queries | Citations | Distinct firms | Most cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real estate | 7 | 71 | 32 | ownright.com (7), slclawyer.ca (6), noblerealestate.ca (6) |
| Personal injury | 7 | 85 | 34 | maanalaw.com (7), bergeronclifford.com (6), findlaylaw.ca (5) |
| Family / divorce | 6 | 39 | 16 | nussbaumlaw.ca (4), iqbalslaw.com (4), barnettlaw.ca (4) |
| Immigration | 1 | 7 | 7 | matkowsky.ca (1), clarkeimmigrationlaw.ca (1), amcaim.ca (1) |
Immigration was measured with a single query. Treat its figures as indicative only.
By Sub-Market
Distinct Firms per Sub-Market
| Sub-market | Queries | Citations | Distinct firms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto (Downtown) | 4 | 31 | 31 |
| North York | 2 | 25 | 25 |
| Scarborough | 3 | 28 | 27 |
| Mississauga | 3 | 27 | 26 |
| Brampton | 3 | 32 | 31 |
| Markham | 3 | 31 | 30 |
| Vaughan | 3 | 28 | 28 |
Where Citations Come From
Firm Websites Dominate — Directories Barely Feature
Of 241 citations captured, 202 (84%) pointed to a law firm's own website. Only 39 went to directories, portals, trade press or forums. This is close to the inverse of traditional legal marketing, where directory listings and review platforms carry much of the weight. For AI Overviews, the content on your own site is the lever — specifically pages that state real fee ranges, in Canadian dollars, for a named service, with the disbursements and variables spelled out.

These 14 sources account for 34 of the 39 non-firm citations; the study did not itemise the remainder. Reddit is the single most-cited non-firm source — where firms decline to publish fees, prospective clients and Google's AI fall back on people discussing what they actually paid.
Method
Proof, Not Promises
- STEP 01
Ran 21 client-intent cost queries through Google with city-level location targeting across seven GTA sub-markets: Toronto (Downtown), North York, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan.
- STEP 02
Covered four practice areas — real estate, personal injury, family and immigration.
- STEP 03
Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
- STEP 04
Crawled on July 30, 2026 between 16:46–16:54 EDT, without personalisation.
- STEP 05
De-duplicated citations per answer, so a firm cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
- STEP 06
Reviewed each cited domain by hand, classifying it as a law firm's own website or another source type, and verified head-office locations individually.
Limitations
This is a single-point-in-time snapshot. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists will differ if re-run; trends require repeated sampling. Firm identification is by website domain, and where a firm operates several sites each is counted separately.
The out-of-GTA figure counts only firms whose head office we confirmed individually, so the true share is likely higher than reported. Immigration was measured with a single query and its figures should be read as indicative only.
Every figure here comes from search results captured on the date stated and can be independently checked by running the same queries yourself. We publish the method so the numbers can be tested, not taken on trust.
What This Report Does Not Show
It does not show your firm's position. Your citation count, the practice areas and sub-markets you are absent from, and which firms are named in the answers your prospective clients see instead — none of that is derivable from a market study.
The pattern here differs from most local markets we study. Positions are consolidating rather than fragmenting: 41 of 87 cited firms already appear across multiple sub-markets, and the ten strongest hold 30% of citations between them. The firms winning are not the largest or the closest. They are the ones that published specific, honest answers about cost — and they are being rewarded across the entire metro for it.
