What Google's AI Recommends Across Calgary
Five citation studies run through one instrument in one region — dental, legal, physiotherapy, accounting and cosmetic surgery — across the same 7 sub-markets, on the same day.
Holding the method constant is what makes them comparable, and Calgary produced the widest spread we have measured: the Google Business Profile carries 42% of one vertical's citations and none at all of another's.
The studies
- Dental 79 practices
- Legal 45 firms
- Physiotherapy 38 clinics
- Accounting 27 firms
- Cosmetic surgery 13 clinics
Every study names each cited business by domain, with the full method and its limitations. No download gate.
What five markets in one region show
The Google Business Profile carries 42% of Calgary cosmetic surgery citations and 0% of accounting ones — a wider spread than anything we found in the GTA. What you sell decides whether this is a publishing problem or a listing problem, and the two are not interchangeable.

The Comparison
Five Markets, One Method
This is the only thing on this page the individual studies cannot tell you. Own-site share says how much of the answer is yours to win; the listing column says whether the work in front of you is publishing or Business Profile maintenance; and the last says how much has already gone to a business outside the region.
| Market | To local websites | Businesses cited | Google listings | From outside the region | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental | 53% | 79 | 26% | 10% | Widest, flattest field we have measured. 63% of practices cited exactly once. |
| Physiotherapy | 52% | 38 | 2% | 20% | A pure content market — and Edmonton holds a fifth of it. |
| Legal | 47% | 45 | 27% | 14% | A realtor team out-cites every law firm on the real-estate question. |
| Accounting | 37% | 27 | 0% | 19% | No listing to optimise at all. 29% of the answer is Reddit, Facebook and the chains. |
| Cosmetic surgery | 19% | 13 | 42% | 27% | The only market anywhere where out-of-region clinics out-cite local ones. |
The remaining share in each row goes to third parties — forums, government, insurers, realtors, financing companies and directories — and to businesses whose published location we could not verify. Each study reports its own accounting in full.

5 Published Reports for This Market
Each is a full report — leaderboard naming every cited business, the three questions broken out, source breakdown, method and limitations. Nothing is held back for the download.
| Study | Captured | |
|---|---|---|
| Dental 21 patient-intent queries across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and three patient questions. 79 practices named, 63% of them cited exactly once — the most open dental market we have measured. | August 2, 2026 | Read the study |
| Legal 21 client-intent fee queries across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and three practice areas. 45 firms named — and one realtor team, across three domains, is cited more often than any of them. | August 2, 2026 | Read the study |
| Physiotherapy 21 patient-intent queries across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and three patient questions. 38 clinics named, only 2% of citations from Google listings, and one Edmonton clinic reaching all seven sub-markets. | August 2, 2026 | Read the study |
| Accounting 21 client-intent fee queries across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and three services. 27 firms named, and not one citation in the entire study came from a Google Business Profile. | August 2, 2026 | Read the study |
| Cosmetic surgery 21 patient-intent cost queries across seven Calgary-region sub-markets and three procedures. Only 13 local clinics cited — and more citations go to clinics outside the region than inside it. | August 2, 2026 | Read the study |
Method
The Same Instrument, Five Times
- STEP 01
Ran the same instrument in each vertical: patient- or client-intent cost queries with city-level location targeting across the same 7 sub-markets — Calgary (Central), Northwest Calgary, Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks.
- STEP 02
Asked three questions per vertical, held constant across every sub-market, so a weak area and a weak question can be told apart.
- STEP 03
Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
- STEP 04
Opened every cited provider domain individually and read its published address from the business's own contact page, rather than inferring location from a name.
- STEP 05
De-duplicated citations per answer, so a business cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
- STEP 06
Counted Google Business Profile panels separately, because they carry no publisher domain and the work required to influence them is entirely different.
The 7 Sub-Markets
Every Calgary study was run against the same list: Calgary (Central), Northwest Calgary, Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks. Sub-market labels follow Google's own location targeting, so the quadrants are Google's rather than the city's.
Holding that constant is what lets the five be compared. It also means the counts on this page are specific to this region — a metro with different geography gets tested against its own sub-markets, and any figure derived from the number of them changes accordingly.
The four Calgary quadrants and the three satellite towns behave differently enough that a single city-wide figure would hide the finding. Listing citations cluster in Chestermere, Okotoks and Northeast Calgary and vanish in Calgary Central and Airdrie; out-of-region providers do consistently better in the towns than in the city.

See Where You Sit In Your Market
These studies show the market. They do not show your position in it — whether you are cited at all, on which of the three questions, and which competitors are named in the answers instead. That analysis is specific to your domain.
