Law Firm SEO — Toronto and the GTA
Law Firm SEO Services in Toronto and the GTA
In July 2026 we asked Google 21 of the questions people in the GTA actually ask when they need a lawyer, and recorded every source its AI answers cited. 87 firms appeared across 7 sub-markets — and 41 of them appeared in more than one.
That last number is the finding. Legal answers in this market are considerably more concentrated than dental ones, which means the firms already appearing tend to keep appearing. It is a harder market to enter and a more defensible one to hold.

Is law firm SEO different in Toronto?
The method is the same anywhere; the competitive shape here is not. Across 21 legal questions we captured 241 citations, 84% of them pointing at a firm's own website. 47% of cited firms appeared in two or more sub-markets, against a much flatter distribution in dental — so in the GTA, legal visibility compounds rather than rotating.
- 7 sub-markets, measured separately — Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan
- 84% of citations went to firm websites, not directories
- 47% of firms appeared in 2+ sub-markets — visibility compounds here
- Only 53% appeared exactly once, against a far higher share in dental
- 7 firms cited here are headquartered elsewhere — proximity is not a moat
- Captured on one date, and AI answers change — this is a snapshot, not a ranking

The Measurement
What Was Cited, Sub-Market by Sub-Market
Query counts differ by sub-market because the questions were drawn from real search patterns rather than distributed evenly. Read the columns against each other, not as a league table.
| Sub-market | Questions | Citations | Distinct firms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto (Downtown) | 4 | 31 | 31 |
| North York | 2 | 25 | 25 |
| Scarborough | 3 | 28 | 27 |
| Mississauga | 3 | 27 | 26 |
| Brampton | 3 | 32 | 31 |
| Markham | 3 | 31 | 30 |
| Vaughan | 3 | 28 | 28 |
What Concentration Means If You Are Not Already In It
A market where 47% of cited firms appear across multiple sub-markets is one where the answer set has partly settled. Entering it is slower than entering dental, and any agency telling you otherwise is not looking at the same data. The compensation is that positions held here are harder for the next firm to take from you.
The route in is not the terms those firms already hold. It is the questions underneath them — situations rather than practice areas, eligibility and deadline questions, and the practice areas where the GTA leaderboard is genuinely thin. 2 firms in the whole dataset were cited in more than one practice area, which tells you how narrow most firms' visibility actually is.
Why We Would Not Build You a Page for “Lawyer Toronto”
City-wide legal terms are dominated by firms with a decade of authority and, in several practice areas, substantial ad budgets. A new page targeting them competes for the most expensive traffic in the market against the parties best equipped to pay for it.
The work that actually moves a GTA firm is narrower: the practice areas you want, the situations clients describe before they know the legal term, and jurisdiction stated clearly enough that unsuitable enquiries self-select out. That is the approach set out on our law firm SEO services page — this one just adds what we measured here.
