> A citation study of Google AI Overviews across 7 Ottawa sub-markets, measuring which clinics AI-generated answers name and cite. 21 clinics, 290 citations, 21 queries, captured August 2, 2026.

A citation study of Google AI Overviews across seven Ottawa sub-markets and three procedures — rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and liposuction — measuring which clinics AI-generated answers name and cite.

21 patient-intent cost queries. 290 citations captured. Just 21 Ottawa clinics account for every website citation in the city, and ten of them hold 87% of those citations.

## Headline finding

**Just 21 Ottawa clinics account for every website citation in the city, and ten of them hold 87% of them.** This is the most closed market we have measured. Either you are one of a very small group Google quotes, or you are absent entirely.

| Figure | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Ottawa clinics cited, city-wide | 21 |
| Held by the top ten | 87% |
| Citations to Google listings | 38% |
| Citations to Toronto-area clinics | 16% |

## What did this study measure?

We ran 21 patient-intent cost queries through Google across seven Ottawa sub-markets — rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and liposuction — and recorded every source cited by the AI Overview each one returned.

- **21 of 21 queries** returned an AI Overview — every cost question we asked
- **290 citations captured**, de-duplicated so a clinic cited twice in one answer counts once
- **38% pointed at Ottawa clinic websites**, 38% at Google Business Profile listings, 16% at Toronto-area clinics and 8% at third parties
- **Only 21 distinct Ottawa clinics** were named across the entire city
- **17 Toronto-area clinics identified** by exact domain match against our July 2026 GTA cosmetic surgery study
- **Single point in time** — captured August 2, 2026, and generated answers vary between runs

_This measures Google AI Overviews only. It does not measure ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot, which use different retrieval systems and require separate tracking._

## Findings

### The market is close to closed

Only 21 Ottawa clinic websites were cited across the entire city, and the ten strongest hold 87% of citations. For comparison, Ottawa dentistry returned 52 practices and Ottawa physiotherapy 39. In cosmetic surgery, either you are one of a very small group Google quotes, or you are absent entirely.

### A handful of clinics answer for the whole city

Six clinics were cited in all seven sub-markets, and four across all three procedures. Patients travel for a surgeon, and the answers reflect that — a Kanata or Orléans search returns substantially the same names as a downtown one.

### Nearly two in five citations are not websites at all

38% point to Google Business Profile listings rather than a clinic's site. The split by procedure is dramatic: 50% of liposuction citations are listings, against 0% for breast augmentation.

### Toronto clinics take 16% of Ottawa's citations

17 clinics identified in our Greater Toronto Area study appear again here — the same domains. They are strongest on breast augmentation, where they take 22% of citations.

## Listings Versus Websites, by Procedure

This pattern replicates almost exactly what we found in Toronto. AI Overviews for cosmetic surgery cite Google Business Profile panels — the listing, not the site — at a rate seen in no other vertical, and the proportion swings hard by procedure.

_Share of citations pointing to an Ottawa clinic's own website_

| Topic | Citations | Local share | Most cited | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Breast augmentation | 63 | 68% | ottawaplasticsurgery.com (7), theottawaclinic.com (7), plasticsurgeryottawa.com (7) | Not one citation was a listing. Content wins outright here, and Ottawa clinics hold more than two thirds of it — with Toronto clinics taking 22%. |
| Liposuction | 123 | 32% | kanataplasticsurgery.com (7), theottawaclinic.com (7), ottawaplasticsurgery.com (7) | Half of all citations here are Google listings. A complete, well-maintained Business Profile does more than another page of copy. |
| Rhinoplasty | 104 | 28% | ottawarhinoplasty.ca (7), theottawaclinic.com (7), newageaesthetics.com (6) | 47% listings, and the lowest local website share of the three. Optimising the wrong asset for the procedure you care about is wasted effort. |

_Patients do travel for a surgeon, so an out-of-city citation is not automatically a misfire the way it is in dentistry. It is still a citation an Ottawa clinic did not get._

## Every Ottawa Clinic Cited, Ranked

All 21 Ottawa cosmetic surgery clinics cited across the 21 queries analysed — the full list is short enough to print in its entirety, which is itself the finding. Ranked by how many generated answers cited the clinic's own website.

## Where the Toronto Clinics Get In

Hunt Club and Ottawa Central are almost untouched — one and two Toronto citations respectively. Kanata and Barrhaven each return eleven.

## Financing Companies Answer the Cost Question

23 citations (8%) went to something that is not a clinic. Beautifi, a cosmetic surgery financing company, is the most-cited non-clinic source — it answers the cost question directly, which is exactly what the query asks.

| Source | What it is | Citations |
| --- | --- | --- |
| beautifi.com | Cosmetic surgery financing | 10 |
| youtube.com | Video platform | 4 |
| plasticsurgery.org | US professional association | 3 |
| plasticsurgery-canada.com | Directory | 1 |
| loanboys.ca | Financing | 1 |
| instagram.com | Social platform | 1 |
| vicpark.com | Non-medical business | 1 |
| int.livhospital.com | Medical tourism (Turkey) | 1 |
| whatclinic.com | Clinic directory | 1 |

## Method

1. Ran 21 patient-intent cost queries through Google with city-level location targeting across seven Ottawa sub-markets: Ottawa Central, Kanata, Nepean, Orléans, Barrhaven, Vanier and Hunt Club.
2. Tested each sub-market with the same three procedures — rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and liposuction, so every area was asked identical questions.
3. Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
4. De-duplicated citations per answer, so a clinic cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
5. Counted sources resolving to a Google Business Profile panel separately as listing citations, attributed to the business named in the panel; these carry no publisher domain, which is why they are reported by count rather than URL.
6. Identified the Toronto-area clinics by exact domain match against our own July 2026 Greater Toronto Area cosmetic surgery study.
7. Crawled on August 2, 2026 without personalisation, and recorded the crawl window so any figure can be re-checked against the day it was captured.

## Limitations

This is a single-point-in-time snapshot. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists will differ if re-run; trends require repeated sampling. Clinic identification is by website domain, and where a group operates several sites each is counted separately unless the study states a merge.

Only three procedures were tested; facial and body procedures not covered here may behave differently. One clinic flagged as out-of-market in our GTA study, ottawarhinoplasty.ca, is correctly counted here as local. Listing citations carry no publisher domain and are counted separately from website citations, so the two figures are not directly comparable.

AI Overviews reach the largest audience of any AI answer surface — no login, no app, shown to anyone searching Google — so this is the widest-reach measurement available. It is not the whole picture, and a business performing well here may perform differently elsewhere. Every figure comes from search results captured on the date stated and can be independently checked by running the same queries yourself.

## Where your clinic sits

This report shows the market. It does not show your position in it — whether you are cited at all, on which procedures, and whether Google is citing your website or only your listing. That analysis is specific to your practice, and we produce it individually.

With only 21 clinics cited across the whole city and the top ten holding 87% of citations, this is not a market where everyone is faintly visible. The useful part is how specific the work is: breast augmentation is won with content, liposuction and rhinoplasty are won substantially through the Google Business Profile, and the two require entirely different effort.

The work that follows from this report is a fixed-price engagement: [the AI Visibility Accelerator](https://enginely.ai/services/ai-visibility-accelerator/index.html.md). Thirteen weeks, a published price, and three separate measurements against these same queries after publication.

## Questions about this report

### Why does this report only cover Google AI Overviews?

Because an AI Overview is rendered inside a public search results page, it can be retrieved directly, for a specific city, at a specific moment — which is how every figure here was captured. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot do not publish their answers anywhere; those answers exist only when a user prompts the model, so measuring them requires running a fixed prompt set against each model repeatedly over time. That is a different instrument, and we report it separately rather than blending two methods into one number.

### Would you get the same numbers if you ran it again?

Not exactly. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so the exact citation list would differ. The structural findings — how concentrated the market is, which source types dominate, which procedures are being lost — are stable enough to act on. Any specific clinic's citation count is a snapshot, not a ranking position.

### Our clinic is not in the table. What does that mean?

It means the clinic was not cited in any of the 21 answers measured, in any of the seven sub-markets. With only 21 clinics cited in the whole city, absence is the normal case here rather than the exception — which is precisely why the position is available. It does not mean the clinic is invisible in Google generally.

### Why are listing citations counted separately?

Because a Google Business Profile panel carries no publisher domain — there is no page being quoted. Counting it alongside website citations would imply Google is citing something the clinic published, when it is citing the fact that the clinic exists. The two are reported separately so the distinction stays visible, and because the work required to influence them is completely different.

### How were clinics identified?

By website domain, exactly as it appeared in the AI Overview source list. Where a group operates several sites, each is counted separately unless this study states otherwise, because the citation was earned by a specific page on a specific domain.

### Can we be removed from the report?

Write to us and we will discuss it. The domains here appear because they were cited in publicly generated search results on the date stated, and the study would be less useful and less checkable without them — but we would rather have the conversation than not.

### Does being cited more often mean more customers?

We did not measure that, and we will not claim it. This study measures citations in generated answers, not clicks, calls or bookings. What it establishes is which clinics are present in the answer someone reads before choosing — presence is a precondition for being chosen, not a substitute for it.
