## What did this study measure?

We ran 21 client-intent fee queries through Google across seven Calgary-region sub-markets — what a real estate lawyer costs, what personal injury lawyers charge, and what a divorce lawyer costs — and recorded every source cited by the AI Overview each one returned.

## Findings

### A realtor is beating every law firm on the real-estate question

One Calgary real estate team appears under three separate domains and takes 12 citations in total — more than the most-cited law firm in the study, which has 11. Across the real-estate question, 18% of citations go to organisations that are not law firms at all: realtors, brokerages and a mortgage broker.

### Personal injury leaks out of the city

Firms with no Calgary-region office take 25% of personal-injury citations — from Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Grande Prairie, Red Deer and, in one case, Los Angeles. Real estate leaks only 9%.

### Google pads the suburbs with businesses that are not law firms

Listing panels returned zero citations in Calgary Central, Northwest Calgary and Airdrie, but 20–23 each in Northeast and Southeast Calgary, Chestermere and Okotoks. 17 of the 73 businesses named in those panels are not law firms — five physiotherapy clinics, nine realtors and a mortgage broker, a land surveyor, a towing company and a kitchen shop.

### The firm leaderboard is broad and shallow

45 Calgary-region firms were cited; 16 of them (36%) exactly once. The top ten hold 48% of local citations and only 2 firms appear across all three practice areas. Practice areas behave as separate markets: winning real estate does not carry into injury or family.

## 11 Firms, 42 Citations, 14% of the Market

Every domain below was opened and its published address recorded. None publishes an office in Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks or Cochrane. rkmlaw.net is Rose, Klein & Marias LLP, a personal injury firm on South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles with around ten offices, all in Southern California and none in Canada. It cannot act for an Alberta claimant. It appears because it published a clear page about how contingency fees work.

## Listings Are Worth Nothing in Three Sub-Markets and a Great Deal in Four

Calgary Central, Northwest Calgary and Airdrie returned no listing citations at all. Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Chestermere and Okotoks returned 20–23 each. This is the same split we found in Calgary dentistry.

## Realtors, Regulators and a Florida Notary

31 citations (10%) went to organisations that are not law firms. On the real-estate question alone that figure is 18%. The first, third and eleventh entries — justinhavre.com, calgaryhomes.ca and calgary.com — are the same organisation, a Calgary real estate team operating three domains. Together they hold 12 citations, more than any single law firm in this study.

## 73 Businesses Named Through a Google Listing

83 citations (27%) point to a Google Business Profile panel rather than a website. 17 of the businesses named are not law firms at all — five physiotherapy clinics, nine realtors and a mortgage broker, a land surveyor, a towing company and a kitchen shop. These appeared almost entirely in the satellite sub-markets, where Google appears to fill the panel with whatever local businesses it has rather than leaving it short.

## Method

1. Ran 21 client-intent fee queries through Google with city-level location targeting across seven Calgary-region sub-markets: Calgary Central, Northwest Calgary, Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere and Okotoks.
2. Tested each sub-market with the same three questions — what a real estate lawyer costs, what personal injury lawyers charge, and what a divorce lawyer costs, so every area was asked identical questions.
3. Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
4. De-duplicated citations per answer, so a firm cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
5. Opened every cited domain individually and read its published address from the organisation's own contact page. Firms with a published Calgary-region office are counted as local, including national firms that publish real Calgary addresses; firms with a verified address elsewhere are named; firms that market Calgary while publishing no Calgary address are reported in a third group rather than guessed at.
6. Counted realtors, brokerages, mortgage brokers, the Law Society of Alberta, mediation franchises and forums as non-firm sources, and checked each Google Business Profile panel individually to see whether the business named is a law firm.
7. Crawled on August 2, 2026 without personalisation, and recorded the crawl window so any figure can be re-checked against the day it was captured.

## Limitations

This is a single-point-in-time snapshot. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists will differ if re-run; trends require repeated sampling. Firm identification is by website domain, and where a group operates several sites each is counted separately unless the study states a merge.

Only three practice areas were tested; corporate, immigration, employment, criminal and estates work may behave differently. Two domains, diamondlaw.ca and diamondlawab.ca, belong to the same national firm and are reported separately because Google cited them as separate sources. One domain, wrightlaw.ca, could not be retrieved and its location is not established. Sub-market labels follow Google's own location targeting, so “Northwest Calgary” is Google's quadrant rather than a municipal boundary.

AI Overviews reach the largest audience of any AI answer surface — no login, no app, shown to anyone searching Google — so this is the widest-reach measurement available. It is not the whole picture, and a business performing well here may perform differently elsewhere. Every figure comes from search results captured on the date stated and can be independently checked by running the same queries yourself.

## Where your firm sits

This report shows the market. It does not show your position in it — whether you are cited at all, in which practice areas, and who is being quoted in your place. That analysis is specific to your firm, and we produce it individually.

The clearest opening in Calgary legal is the real-estate fee question. It is currently answered by realtors, because realtors publish closing-cost breakdowns and conveyancing firms publish “contact us for a quote”. The second is personal injury, where a quarter of the answer has already gone to firms in Edmonton, Grande Prairie and California. Neither is a ranking problem. Both are a publishing problem.

## Questions about this report

### Why does this report only cover Google AI Overviews?

Because an AI Overview is rendered inside a public search results page, it can be retrieved directly, for a specific city, at a specific moment — which is how every figure here was captured. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot do not publish their answers anywhere; those answers exist only when a user prompts the model, so measuring them requires running a fixed prompt set against each model repeatedly over time. That is a different instrument, and we report it separately rather than blending two methods into one number.

### Would you get the same numbers if you ran it again?

Not exactly. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so the exact citation list would differ. The structural findings — how concentrated the market is, which source types dominate, which practice areas are being lost — are stable enough to act on. Any specific firm's citation count is a snapshot, not a ranking position.

### Our firm is not in the table. What does that mean?

It means the firm was not cited in any of the 21 answers measured, in any of the seven sub-markets. It does not mean the firm is invisible in Google generally, or that it performs badly in the map pack — those are different surfaces measured differently. It does mean that for these three fee questions, the answer a prospective client received named someone else, and one time in five that someone was not a law firm.

### Why are realtors counted at all in a study about lawyers?

Because they are taking the citation. The question measured is “how much does a real estate lawyer cost”, and Google is answering it partly with closing-cost pages published by brokerages. Excluding them would produce a tidier local share and a less accurate description of what a prospective client actually reads. We count what was cited, then say what it is.

### How were firms identified?

By website domain, exactly as it appeared in the AI Overview source list. Where a group operates several sites, each is counted separately unless this study states otherwise, because the citation was earned by a specific page on a specific domain.

### Can we be removed from the report?

Write to us and we will discuss it. The domains here appear because they were cited in publicly generated search results on the date stated, and the study would be less useful and less checkable without them — but we would rather have the conversation than not.

### Does being cited more often mean more customers?

We did not measure that, and we will not claim it. This study measures citations in generated answers, not clicks, calls or bookings. What it establishes is which firms are present in the answer someone reads before choosing — presence is a precondition for being chosen, not a substitute for it.
