## Headline finding

**Not one citation in this study came from a Google Business Profile.** Calgary accounting is decided entirely on published pages — and 29% of those pages belong to Reddit, Facebook, the CRA and the national tax-prep chains rather than to any firm.

## What did this study measure?

We ran 21 client-intent fee queries through Google across seven Calgary-region sub-markets — what an accountant charges for small-business taxes, what personal tax preparation costs, and what a bookkeeper costs per month — and recorded every source cited by the AI Overview each one returned.

## Findings

### The Google Business Profile is worth nothing here

Across all 21 queries, zero citations came from a listing panel — the only study in this series with none at all. Every citation went to a published page. Reviews, categories and map pins do not enter this market.

### Personal tax has largely left the profession

Calgary firms take 48% of small-business tax citations and 40% of bookkeeping, but only 26% of “how much does it cost to get your taxes done”. 46% of that question goes to non-firms: H&R Block, Liberty Tax, Reddit, Facebook and a Calgary poverty-reduction charity that runs free tax clinics.

### A domain called “accountants in Calgary” has no Calgary address

accountantsincalgary.ca takes 9 citations. It is a landing page for BOMCAS, an Edmonton-area brand; it answers on a 780 number and publishes no Calgary street address. Meanwhile altatax.com — a genuine Edmonton firm — is cited in all seven Calgary sub-markets.

### Calgary is exporting as well as importing

maxprofinancials.ca is headquartered on Macleod Trail SE in Calgary. It is cited 6 times here, 10 times in our Greater Toronto Area study and 7 times in Ottawa. A Calgary firm with the right published content is already answering Toronto's and Ottawa's fee questions.

## Three Services, Three Different Fights

Tax firms and bookkeeping firms are almost disjoint sets, and each question loses ground to a different competitor.

Every domain below was opened and its published head-office address recorded. None publishes an office in Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks or Cochrane. altatax.com is a genuine Edmonton firm, and it is cited in all seven Calgary sub-markets.

## Firms That Publish No Verifiable Location

A further 34 citations (14%) go to sites that publish no address, or that block retrieval so we could not read one. accountantsincalgary.ca is the one to look at twice: the domain name is the search term, but the site is a landing page for BOMCAS, an Edmonton-area accounting brand. It lists a 780 area-code number, gives “Calgary, Alberta” with no street address, and routes to an @bomcas.ca inbox. Google has no way to tell that apart from a Calgary practice, and neither does a prospect skimming an AI answer.

## 21 Domains Appear in Calgary and at Least One Other Metro

We ran this identical method across seven Greater Toronto Area sub-markets in July 2026 and seven Ottawa sub-markets in August — the same firms are answering fee questions in cities 3,000 km apart. Only one of these, maxprofinancials.ca, is a Calgary firm. It is cited in all three cities, and more in Toronto than at home.

## Reddit and Facebook Out-Cite Every Firm in the City

68 citations (29%) went to sources that are not accounting firms. Reddit and Facebook together take 28 citations — more than the two most-cited Calgary firms combined, which hold 25 between them. That is not a ranking problem; it is what happens when the only public answer to “what does this cost” is a discussion thread, because no firm has published a number.

## Method

1. Ran 21 client-intent fee queries through Google with city-level location targeting across seven Calgary-region sub-markets: Calgary Central, Northwest Calgary, Northeast Calgary, Southeast Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere and Okotoks.
2. Tested each sub-market with the same three questions — small-business tax, personal tax preparation and monthly bookkeeping, so every area was asked identical questions.
3. Captured the complete search result page for each query, including the AI Overview block, its generated text, and every source it cited.
4. De-duplicated citations per answer, so a firm cited twice within a single AI Overview counts once.
5. Opened every provider domain individually and read its published head-office address from the firm's own contact page. Firms with a verified Calgary-region office are counted as local, including one national firm that publishes a real Calgary branch address; firms with a verified address elsewhere are named; firms publishing no address, or whose sites block retrieval, are reported in a third group rather than guessed at.
6. Counted government, forums, social platforms, national tax-prep chains, software vendors, salary aggregators, lead-generation marketplaces, registry agents, insurance brokers and charities as non-firm sources, and merged two domains belonging to the same Calgary firm.
7. Crawled on August 2, 2026 without personalisation, and recorded the crawl window so any figure can be re-checked against the day it was captured.

## Limitations

This is a single-point-in-time snapshot. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so exact citation lists will differ if re-run; trends require repeated sampling. Firm identification is by website domain, and where a group operates several sites each is counted separately unless the study states a merge.

Only fee-intent questions were tested; audit, advisory, incorporation and cross-border queries may behave differently. Nine domains publish no verifiable location or block automated retrieval and are reported in their own group rather than assigned to a region. Sub-market labels follow Google's own location targeting, so “Northwest Calgary” is Google's quadrant rather than a municipal boundary.

AI Overviews reach the largest audience of any AI answer surface — no login, no app, shown to anyone searching Google — so this is the widest-reach measurement available. It is not the whole picture, and a business performing well here may perform differently elsewhere. Every figure comes from search results captured on the date stated and can be independently checked by running the same queries yourself.

Calgary accounting is the cleanest brief in this series. There is no listing to optimise, no reviews to chase and no map pack to fight: 21 queries returned zero listing citations. There is only the question of whether you have published a page that answers what you charge — and today 29% of that answer belongs to Reddit, Facebook, the CRA and the national chains, while a further third belongs to firms with no verifiable Calgary office.

## Questions about this report

### Why does this report only cover Google AI Overviews?

Because an AI Overview is rendered inside a public search results page, it can be retrieved directly, for a specific city, at a specific moment — which is how every figure here was captured. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot do not publish their answers anywhere; those answers exist only when a user prompts the model, so measuring them requires running a fixed prompt set against each model repeatedly over time. That is a different instrument, and we report it separately rather than blending two methods into one number.

### Would you get the same numbers if you ran it again?

Not exactly. AI Overviews are generated fresh per query and vary between runs, so the exact citation list would differ. The structural findings — how concentrated the market is, which source types dominate, which services are being lost — are stable enough to act on. Any specific firm's citation count is a snapshot, not a ranking position.

### Our firm is not in the table. What does that mean?

It means the firm was not cited in any of the 21 answers measured, in any of the seven sub-markets. Only 27 firms in the whole region were, so absence here is the normal case rather than the exception. It does mean that for these three fee questions, the answer a prospective client received named someone else — and roughly three times in ten, that someone was Reddit, Facebook or a tax-prep chain.

### Zero listing citations — is that a measurement error?

We asked the same question. It is not: the crawl captured Google Business Profile panels correctly in every other vertical we ran on the same days, including 26% of Calgary dental citations and 27% of Calgary legal ones. Accounting simply did not return them. We report the zero as measured and would expect it to move if the query set changed.

### How were firms identified?

By website domain, exactly as it appeared in the AI Overview source list. Where a group operates several sites, each is counted separately unless this study states otherwise, because the citation was earned by a specific page on a specific domain.

### Can we be removed from the report?

Write to us and we will discuss it. The domains here appear because they were cited in publicly generated search results on the date stated, and the study would be less useful and less checkable without them — but we would rather have the conversation than not.

### Does being cited more often mean more customers?

We did not measure that, and we will not claim it. This study measures citations in generated answers, not clicks, calls or bookings. What it establishes is which firms are present in the answer someone reads before choosing — presence is a precondition for being chosen, not a substitute for it.
